June 13 — August 31, 2026

As the nation marks 250 years of independence with large parades and public festivities, the Morris Arboretum & Gardens offers a peaceful alternative, a sanctuary where visitors can recharge, reconnect, and rediscover happiness through the restorative power of nature.

Visitors of all ages can delight in tree swings that recall the freedom of childhood; step into the Morris Cottage and engage your senses through sight, sound, touch, and scent; and experience three Morris trees turned into Singing Trees, activated by wind chimes that create joyful, meditative soundscapes and invite visitors to gather. Colorful Adirondack chairs invite lingering across the gardens, while a giant floating rubber duck in the Morris Pond adds an element of surprise and whimsy.

Running in conjunction with Pursuit of Happiness is Garden Railway: Revolutionary Philly, which invites visitors of all ages to take a miniature journey through eighteenth‑century Philadelphia, along with Plants from the Colonial Era, a self-guided tour that highlights the trees, herbs, and flowers that would have been familiar to area residents during that era. Together, these exhibitions reveal how ideas rooted in the past continue to shape how we experience nature and joy today.

Plants in the Colonial Era

MAY 22 – SEPTEMBER 30

Plants from the Colonial Era explores the living landscape of eighteenth-century Philadelphia. This self-guided exhibition highlights plants that would have been familiar to area residents during the colonial era.

These plants supported daily life in countless ways, providing food, medicine, building materials, and sources of beauty and comfort. From plants found in home gardens to those in Penn’s woods, many of which were long stewarded by local Indigenous communities, the exhibition reveals how nature shaped civic life, independence, and resilience in early Philadelphia.
